Aphids
Aphids, also known as Aphidoidea, are small insects that feed on plant sap. They are common pests in gardens and agricultural crops, attacking a variety of plants. Aphids are typically 1 to 4 millimeters in size and come in various colors, including green, brown, black, and red.
They attack different types of plants, including fruit trees, vegetables, flowering plants, and others. Some of the crops that are frequently attacked include:
- Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
- Bell Peppers
- Apples
- Pears
- Plums
- Roses
- Cabbage
- Watermelons
- Sugarcane
Aphids can cause various types of damage to plants, including the following:
- They suck plant sap, which can weaken the plant and slow its growth.
- They excrete honeydew, which can promote the development of fungi, such as sooty mold.
- They transmit viruses from one plant to another.
- They can cause curling, twisting, and deformation of leaves.
- They reduce crop quality and yield.
Neem oil is a natural product that is often used as a control measure for aphids and other pests on plants. It works in several ways:
- Controls Aphids: Neem oil contains ingredients like azadirachtin, limonoids, and other compounds that inhibit aphids, disrupting their feeding and reproduction.
- Molt Disruption: Neem oil interferes with the molting process of aphids, preventing their normal development.
- Antifungal Action: Neem oil also helps in controlling fungal infections that often accompany aphid infestations due to the honeydew they secrete.
The best time to apply neem oil against aphids is usually early in the morning or late in the evening when aphids are least active. Also, avoid applying during hot sunny days to prevent plant burn. Dilute the neem oil in water according to the product's instructions and apply thoroughly to the affected plants, especially the undersides of leaves where aphids often hide. Regular applications may be required to completely control the aphid population on your plants.
